Station Drop-In Drop-In Centres

Known as The Station as it is located on the site of a railway building, the drop-in based next door to St John's Accommodation Centre has around 4,5000 visitors each year. It is open to young people from the YMCA's accommodation centres, referrals from the local council and self-referrals - anyone under 26.

The Stations role is to listen to young people

Its role is to listen to young people rather than to offer a counselling service. Workers are then able to identify and make contact with local agencies that can offer further support and practical help.

The range of issues the support workers help with include emotional problems and low self-esteem, issues surrounding debt, substance misuse and antisocial behaviour. It points young people toward educational and employment opportunity in the locality, and nearby counselling services.

A Connexions worker is based at the centre and from time to time holds Connexions surgeries there. Other support agencies use the centre as an access point for the client group, including CAN (Council on Addiction Northamptshire) and representatives from local colleges and the Prince's Trust.

The Station offers washing and cooking facilities, a laundry, and a shower to meet the practical needs of people who are homeless. It also provides social facilities including table tennis and pool tables, as well as more creative or instructional activities such as painting or cooking.

The Station Drop-in acts as the referral centre for our Northampton housing projects. Experienced staff will interview the young person and help them to identify the accommodation that most suits their needs.
