Derngate Accommodation Support

A Derngate bedsitA second stage accommodation project for young people aged 16 to 25, helping them to extend their development through training, education and employment.

Derngate House opened in September 2006 having been redeveloped from an office building, funded by YMCA capital with support from major donors including the Department of Communities & Local Government. It houses 8 young people in shared accommodation and a further 4 in bed-sits.

The YMCA prepare residents for independent living

Having both shared accommodation and bed-sits enables the YMCA to provide the appropriate levels of support for the needs of the resident and to prepare them for independent living. This support includes understanding benefits, tenant responsibility, budgeting and CV writing, as well as help to find work or training placements and regular assessment of their progress. The aim is to help residents to move to their own independent accommodation as soon as they are ready.

The project has on-site training facilities provided by YMCA Training, improving the access to development opportunities for our residents.

"... an outstanding project."

Maff Potts, Department of Communities & Local Government

"I have developed myself as a person and had the chance to meet other people and broaden my horizons. It has been useful to have a say in how my centre is run and get good ideas from other areas."

Derngate Resident

"At Derngate House we provide a platform from which young people from disadvantaged backgrounds can realise their dreams"
